Jacksonville HIE Birth Injury Lawyer

Helping Victims of Malpractice Throughout Florida

Childbirth should be a wonderful, exciting experience for parents. However, when a child suffers a serious birth injury, their family is likely to remember the birth for all the wrong reasons. Before babies are born, they rely entirely on their mothers for all sustenance, including nutrients, shelter, and oxygen. When the child is deprived of any of these necessities it can lead to serious, life-threatening consequences.

If a child is deprived of oxygen for too long, they could suffer from HIE, or hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. HIE is a type of brain injury that can cause serious disabilities, including cerebral palsy. If your baby suffered a serious brain injury after being deprived of oxygen during or prior to birth, you may have a birth injury case.

About Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, or HIE, is a type of brain injury that can develop when a baby’s brain is deprived of oxygen for too long. As a result of oxygen deprivation, also called asphyxia, the baby can experience serious brain damage. When the baby’s brain is deprived of oxygen, it decreases blood flow to the brain, which can result in permanent brain damage, impairments, and disorders.

According to the HIE Help Center, babies who suffer from HIE usually do not exhibit symptoms immediately. They may not show signs of brain damage until developmental delays are noticeable, which is why it is so important for children to receive immediate treatment after asphyxia.

What Causes HIE?

HIE is more common in complex births. If, for example, the mother has an overlong labor process, or if the mother has preexisting medical conditions, the birth is more likely to be traumatic. However, it is the responsibility of the mother and baby’s medical team to respond to these complications accordingly. If a doctor, nurse, or other medical professional fails to handle birth complications quickly and properly, it could cause the baby and mother serious harm.

A few potential causes of HIE include:

  • Failure to perform a necessary caesarian section
  • Infection
  • Umbilical cord complications
  • Placental abruption or placental previa
  • Uterine rupture
  • Failure to monitor the fetal heart rate properly
  • Prolonged labor
  • Mismanagement of a neonatal condition

Problems Associated with HIE

A child who suffers from HIE can develop other serious types of brain damage. Some babies with HIE develop Cerebral Palsy, intraventricular hemorrhages, hydrocephalus, learning disabilities, seizures, and behavioral problems, to name a few.

If caught immediately, oxygen deprivation can be addressed and the child may avoid serious brain damage. Unfortunately, if this is not caught in time, or is not treated properly, the baby can suffer permanent, irreparable damage.

One of the most common treatments for HIE and other infant brain injuries is cooling therapy. Cooling therapy lowers the baby’s body temperature in an effort to counter the effects of oxygen deprivation, preventing brain damage and other resulting disorders, like cerebral palsy. However, if a doctor fails to us this therapy within a timely manner, the child could suffer additional damage.
