Attorney Roger Dodd Guest-Stars on The Advocacy Podcast, Giving “A Masterclass in Cross-Examination”

Spohrer Dodd Trial Attorneys

Our senior partner at Spohrer Dodd, Attorney Roger J. Dodd, is one of the nation’s preeminent trial lawyers and has dedicated his career to advocating for the plaintiffs of civil cases. He is not secretive about his legal techniques, however: He often shares his knowledge by participating in continuing legal education (CLE) programs, and he co-authored “Cross-Examination: Science and Techniques” and “Cross-Examination for Depositions” to reach a more bookish audience. His latest effort to share his skills was his appearance as a guest star on The Advocacy Podcast, founded and hosted by Barrister Bibi Badejo, to present “A Masterclass in Cross-Examination.”

The Advocacy Podcast was created by Barrister Badejo to serve as a platform on which some of the most well-known and successful trial lawyers and dvocates could share their knowledge with others. As such, on the podcast, Barrister Badejo hosts legal professionals from England, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Needless to say, Barrister Badejo works in the legal industry herself, practicing family law from 4 Brick Court. She is also a Bencher at The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple.

The core belief at the heart of the podcast is that “good advocates are not born, and that you are never too experienced to continue actively developing and perfecting your advocacy skills.” This message rang true to Attorney Dodd; after all, this is part of the reason why he is so persistent in sharing his skills with the rest of the legal community.

In conversation with Barrister Badejo, Attorney Dodd discussed his 10 tips for cross-examination, covering reactive page preparation, constructive cross-examination, and how to make your point visual.

He also discussed his top-3 tips on how to control witnesses:

  1. It is more important to listen than to talk.
  2. Make sure to focus on each chapter and why it matters.
  3. Utilize constructive cross, the practice of pushing your narrative instead of arguing against that of the opposing party.

This barely scratches the surface of what was covered in his episode of the podcast. To take a deep dive into Attorney Dodd’s cross-examination tips and advice, listen to the full podcast here.
